Diwali, the festival of lights is one of the most popular and eagerly awaited festivals of India. It is celebrated with great pomp and show across the length and breadth of the country. This five day long festival is celebrated in the month of October or November every year. Diwali marks the end of the Hindu calendar year and the start of the new year. Diwali is celebrated to mark the triumph of good over evil. The festival is also a celebration of the arrival of Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshman from their 14 year long exile. Diwali is also associated with the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. The festival of Diwali begins with Dhanteras, followed by Narak Chaturdashi, Diwali or Lakshmi Puja, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj. Dhanteras is celebrated two days before Diwali. On this day, Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi was born on this day. People clean their homes and workplaces and decorate them with lights and rangolis. Narak Chaturdashi is celebrated the day before Diwali. On this day, Lord Krishna defeated the demon king Narakasura. The day is also celebrated as the victory of good over evil. Diwali, the festival of lights is celebrated on the third day. On this day, Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped. Homes and workplaces are decorated with lights and diyas. Fireworks are an integral part of the Diwali celebrations. Govardhan Puja is celebrated on the fourth day of Diwali. On this day, Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan hill to save the people of Vrindavan from the wrath of Lord Indra. Bhai Dooj is celebrated on the fifth and final day of Diwali.
